The Danger of A Religion That Leaves Out Christ

The religious leaders faced a crisis - not of faith, but of control. Jesus wasn't just performing miracles; He was threatening their entire system of power and profit. When He cleansed the temple, He exposed their corrupt practices that had turned worship into a money-making scheme. They had built an empire where they controlled access to God, and Jesus was dismantling it with truth. This reveals something chilling about human nature: we can become so invested in our religious systems that we oppose God Himself to protect them. The leaders knew Jesus was the Christ, but they chose their positions over the Savior. Their problem wasn't theological - it was political and financial.

Today, we face similar temptations. We can become so attached to our church traditions, denominational distinctives, or religious practices that we miss Jesus entirely. We might defend our way of doing things more passionately than we pursue Christ Himself. The beautiful truth is that Jesus didn't come to build another religious system - He came to build relationships. He wants to free us from the burden of religious performance and invite us into authentic fellowship with Him. When we encounter Jesus, the question isn't whether our religious practices are perfect, but whether our hearts are surrendered to Him.

Bible Verse

'Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What are we accomplishing?" they asked. "Here is this man performing many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation."' - John 11:47-48

Reflection Question

What religious practices or traditions might you be holding onto more tightly than your relationship with Jesus?

Prayer

Father, help me value my relationship with You above any religious system or tradition. Show me where I might be choosing control over surrender. Amen.
