Religion Is Not Enough
Cain brought an offering to God. He built an altar. By every outward appearance, he looked like a
worshiper. But something was deeply wrong. He came to God on His own terms instead of God's terms, and God rejected it. This pattern did not end with Cain. For thousands of years, people have tried to reach God through good works, moral living, philosophy, and self-righteousness. It feels sincere. It can even look impressive. But sincerity without surrender is still the way of Cain. The difference between true faith and false religion comes down to one thing: the blood of Jesus Christ. Hebrews 9:22 tells us that without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness. Abel brought a blood sacrifice in faith, and God accepted it. Cain brought what he thought was good enough, and it was not. This is actually encouraging news, because it means salvation does not depend on how hard you try or how good you are. It depends entirely on what Jesus already did. You do not have to earn your way to God. You simply have to come to Him on His terms, through faith in Christ alone.
Bible Verse
"In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness." - Hebrews 9:22
Reflection Question
In what areas of your life might you be approaching God on your own terms rather than trusting fully in what Jesus has already done?
Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I have trusted in my own efforts more than in the finished work of Jesus. Help me to come to You on Your terms, through faith in Christ alone. Amen.
