Freed to Become Useful
Scripture Mark 10:42–45
Central Truth
Every believer has been freed and equipped to represent God’s kingdom through service.
Devotional
No one was freer than Jesus.
He was not controlled by public approval, selfish ambition, fear, possessions, or the expectations of others. Yet Jesus used His freedom to serve.
He washed feet. He fed hungry people. He touched lepers. He welcomed outsiders. He lifted the broken. He stopped for people whom society ignored.
Jesus did not use His position to avoid service. He used His position as an opportunity to serve more deeply.
God did not free us so we could become selfish. God freed us so we could become useful.
The church needs useful believers—people willing to teach, encourage, visit, prepare, clean, pray, give, welcome, protect, organize, and care. The community needs believers who will serve the lonely, forgotten, hungry, elderly, grieving, and hurting.
Every act of service performed in Jesus’ name becomes a small window through which others can see the kingdom of God.
The question is not merely, “How free am I?”
The better question is, “Who is being served because Christ has made me free?”
Reflection Questions
Who is presently benefiting from the freedom and gifts God has given you?
Is there a need in your church that you have been expecting someone else to meet?
Which people in your community are most easily forgotten?
Prayer
Jesus, You came not to be served but to serve. Make me useful in Your hands. Open my eyes to the needs around me and remove every excuse that keeps me from helping. Let my service show others what Your kingdom looks like. Amen.
