Freed For Something

Scripture Galatians 5:13–14

Central Truth

Christ does not free us to live selfishly; He frees us to serve one another through love.

Devotional

Many people define freedom as the ability to get their own way.

The world says freedom means serving yourself, promoting yourself, protecting yourself, and placing yourself first. Jesus presents an entirely different picture.

The world says, “Climb the ladder.”

Jesus says, “Carry a towel.”

The world says, “Be first.”

Jesus says, “Be willing to be last.”

The world says, “Make others serve you.”

Jesus says, “Serve.”

Christian freedom is not merely freedom from condemnation. It is freedom for a new purpose.

Before Christ changes us, selfishness controls much of what we do. We measure relationships by what we receive. We evaluate churches according to how well they serve us. We view time, ability, money, and influence primarily as tools for personal advancement.

Grace changes that direction.

Because Christ has met our deepest need, we no longer have to make ourselves the center of every situation. We become free to notice others, free to give, free to sacrifice, and free to serve without demanding recognition.

Freedom in Christ does not make us more self-centered. It makes us more Christ-centered and others-focused.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where are you most tempted to demand your own way?

  2. Do you evaluate your church primarily by what you receive or by how you can serve?

  3. What does it mean for you personally to “carry a towel”?

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for using freedom as an excuse for selfishness. Give me the mind of Christ. Help me release my demand to be first, noticed, and served. Show me how to serve someone through love today. Amen.
