Faith Over Understanding

This is day two of a five-day devotional on the impossible becoming absolute.

Mary asked a perfectly reasonable question: 'How can this be, since I am a virgin?' She wasn't doubting God's power; she was seeking to understand His plan. Yet when the angel explained that the Holy Spirit would accomplish this miracle, Mary didn't demand a detailed blueprint. She didn't ask for scientific proof or require a step-by-step manual.

Instead, she demonstrated something beautiful: faith that transcends understanding. Mary shows us that we don't need to comprehend every detail of God's plan to participate in it. Sometimes the most profound acts of faith happen when we say yes to God despite our limited understanding.

In our information-driven world, we often feel we need to understand everything before we can trust. We want guarantees, explanations, and proof before we'll take a step of faith. But God's ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts higher than our thoughts. There will always be mysteries we cannot fully grasp this side of heaven.

Mary's faith teaches us that it's okay not to have all the answers. What matters is knowing the One who does. When we focus on God's character—His love, faithfulness, and power—we can trust Him even when His methods seem unclear. Perhaps God is calling you to step into something that doesn't make complete sense to you right now. Maybe He's asking you to forgive someone who hurt you deeply, to pursue a calling that seems impractical, or to trust Him with a situation that feels uncertain. Like Mary, you can choose faith over full understanding.

Bible Verse

'For nothing will be impossible with God.' - Luke 1:37

Reflection Question

In what area of your life is God asking you to trust Him without having all the answers?

Quote

Sometimes having faith is more important than having knowledge. We don't have to Know everything. We just have to have faith in God who does and can do anything.

Prayer

Father, help me to have faith like Mary's—faith that doesn't require complete understanding but trusts in Your perfect character. When I can't see the whole picture, help me to focus on You, the One who sees all things clearly. Amen.
