When God Announces the Impossible
Day one of a five-day devotion on when the impossible becomes a reality. This is from my sermon on 12/14/2025.
Have you ever received news that seemed absolutely impossible? Mary certainly did. A teenage girl living in Nazareth, she was going about her ordinary life when an angel appeared with extraordinary news: she would conceive and bear the Son of God. For a virgin, this announcement defied every natural law she understood.
Yet this wasn't just any impossible situation—it was God's impossible situation. When we face circumstances that seem beyond our ability to handle, we often forget that God specializes in the impossible. He doesn't ask us to figure out the 'how' before we say 'yes.' He simply asks us to trust Him. Mary could have focused on all the reasons why this couldn't work: her age, her unmarried status, what people would think, or how Joseph would react. Instead, she chose to focus on who was asking. The same God who spoke the universe into existence was now speaking into her life.
Today, you might be facing your own impossible situation. Perhaps it's a relationship that seems beyond repair, a financial burden that feels overwhelming, or a dream that appears out of reach. Remember that the God who made the impossible possible in Mary's life is the same God working in yours. He hasn't changed, and His power hasn't diminished. The impossible isn't a barrier to God—it's His specialty. When we encounter situations that are beyond our human ability, we're in the perfect position to witness His divine intervention.
Bible Verse
'And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God."' - Luke 1:35
Reflection Question
What impossible situation in your life are you trying to solve on your own instead of trusting God's power to work through it?
Prayer
Lord, help me to trust You with the impossible situations in my life. Give me faith like Mary's to say yes to Your plans, even when I don't understand how You'll work them out. I believe that nothing is impossible with You. Amen.
