A Heart of True Sorrow
When life falls apart, our natural response is to grieve what we've lost. But there's a deeper kind of sorrow that God desires from us - one that goes beyond mourning our circumstances to mourning our sin itself. Many of us feel terrible when our choices wreck our relationships, damage our reputation, or cost us opportunities. We're genuinely sorry about the mess we're in. But are we broken over the fact that we've offended a holy God? There's a world of difference between regretting consequences and repenting of sin. One focuses on how we've been hurt; the other focuses on how we've hurt God. True repentance begins when we stop being primarily concerned about how sin affects us and start being grieved over how it affects our relationship with God. This shift in perspective changes everything - it moves us from self-pity to genuine transformation.
