More Than Just Residing

This is day one of a 5-day devotional answering this question: Have you lost your spiritual edge?

Have you ever felt like your faith has become routine? Like you're going through the motions but missing the power and joy you once experienced? You're not alone in this struggle. Many believers find themselves in seasons where their spiritual passion feels dim, even though they know God is still with them.

Here's an important truth: There's a significant difference between having the Holy Spirit dwelling in you and being filled with the Holy Spirit. When you accepted Christ as your Savior, the Holy Spirit took up residence in your heart permanently. That's a beautiful reality that never changes. But being filled with the Spirit is an ongoing, continuous experience that requires our active participation.

Think of it like having a guest in your home versus having that guest actively involved in every aspect of your daily life. The Holy Spirit wants to be more than just a resident in your heart - He wants to be the controlling influence in your thoughts, actions, and decisions. When we're truly Spirit-filled, we experience the same kind of control that alcohol has over someone who is intoxicated, except this control leads to life, joy, and spiritual power. The good news is that God doesn't want your best efforts. Your best has never been good enough, and that's exactly why Jesus came to die for your sins. Instead, God wants His best to shine through you, and that can only happen when you're filled with His Spirit. This isn't about trying harder or doing more - it's about surrendering control and allowing God's power to work through you.

Bible Verse

'Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.' - Ephesians 5:18

Reflection Question

In what areas of your life are you trying to operate in your own strength rather than allowing the Holy Spirit to control and empower you?

Quote

“The Holy Spirit lives in you when you are saved, but there's a difference between the Holy Spirit living in you and you being filled by the Spirit.”

Prayer

Lord, I confess that I've been trying to live the Christian life in my own strength. Help me understand the difference between having Your Spirit and being filled with Your Spirit. I surrender control of my life to You and ask You to fill me fresh today. Amen.
