The True Cost of Freedom

As we reflect on Memorial Day, it's easy to get caught up in barbecues and beach trips. But beneath the festivities lies a sobering truth: freedom is never free. Over one million American service members have paid the ultimate price for our liberty, most of them strangers who chose to die so we could live free. Their sacrifice reminds us that true freedom always requires blood. This same principle applies to our spiritual lives. We were enslaved to sin, helpless and broken, unable to free ourselves no matter how hard we tried. Like the Israelites in Egypt after 430 years of bondage, we needed a deliverer. That deliverer came in the person of Jesus Christ, who shed His precious blood to purchase our freedom from sin's prison camp. Today, as we honor those who died for our national freedom, let's also remember the One who died for our eternal freedom.

Bible Verse

'But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.' -Romans 5:8

Reflection Question

How does understanding the cost of both national and spiritual freedom change the way you view your daily choices?

Prayer

Lord, help me never to take for granted the sacrifices made for my freedom, both by soldiers and by Your Son. May I live worthy of such great love. Amen.
