The Heart of a Servant
Day 3 of a 5-day devotional on Serving Christ
In a world that celebrates being served, Jesus turned everything upside down by choosing to serve. He didn't demand a throne; He picked up a towel. He didn't seek recognition; He sought opportunities to meet needs. This radical approach to leadership and life is what He calls us to embrace.
Servanthood isn't about being a doormat or having low self-esteem. It's about having such confidence in who you are in Christ that you can freely give of yourself to others. When we serve with the right heart, we're not diminishing ourselves—we're reflecting the character of Jesus and participating in His mission.
The challenge many of us face is our natural desire to be in control, to be recognized, to have our way. But Jesus calls us to a different path. He asks us to consider others' needs above our own comfort, to use our gifts for their benefit, and to find joy in seeing others succeed and grow.
This servant's heart transforms everything about how we approach church life. Instead of asking "What can the church do for me?" we begin asking "How can I contribute to what God is doing here?" Instead of criticizing what's not perfect, we roll up our sleeves and help make things better. This shift in perspective is what turns a collection of individuals into a thriving, growing church family.
Bible Verse
"Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." - Matthew 20:26-28
Reflection Question
In what areas of your life do you find it most difficult to put others' needs before your own, and how can you begin to develop a more servant-hearted approach in those situations?
Quote
“We need more in the church wanting to serve instead of wanting to be served.”
Prayer
Jesus, You are the perfect example of servant leadership. Transform my heart to be more like Yours. Help me find joy in serving others and give me opportunities to demonstrate Your love through acts of service.
Amen.
