The Divided Heart
Marriage requires exclusive devotion - you can't be faithful to your spouse while pursuing other romantic relationships. Similarly, our relationship with Christ demands undivided loyalty. When we become Christians, we enter into a covenant relationship where Christ becomes our spiritual bridegroom. Yet the world constantly competes for our affection, offering temporary pleasures and false promises that can seduce our hearts away from Christ. This spiritual adultery doesn't happen overnight; it's a gradual drift that begins when we start loving worldly things more than we love God. The problem isn't that we occasionally enjoy good things in this world - it's when those things begin to take priority over our relationship with Christ. A divided heart cannot pray effectively because it's trying to serve two masters simultaneously. God sees through our attempts to compartmentalize our lives, keeping Him in one corner while the world occupies the rest. True prayer flows from a heart that has chosen Christ above all else.
Bible Verse
'You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.' - James 4:4
Reflection Question
