Proof of Salvation

How do you know if your faith is real? This question has troubled many believers throughout history. The answer isn't found in a prayer you prayed or a decision you made, but in the ongoing evidence of transformation in your life - specifically, in your response to sin through repentance.

True repentance is both the result of salvation and the proof of salvation. When God saves us, He doesn't just forgive our past sins; He gives us a new nature that hates sin and loves righteousness. This new nature naturally produces repentance when we fall short.

Salvation isn't a watered-down version of following Jesus that allows us to continue living however we want. Christ saved us from sin, not to sin. If someone claims to know Christ but shows no evidence of turning from sin, their salvation should be seriously questioned.

This doesn't mean Christians never struggle with sin - we all do. But there's a fundamental difference between struggling against sin and embracing it. A true believer may fall into sin, but they won't stay there comfortably. The Holy Spirit will convict them, and they'll repent and turn back to God.

The encouraging truth is that if you find yourself broken over your sin, if you feel convicted when you fall short, if you have a desire to change and live for God - these are actually signs that the Holy Spirit is working in your life. Your very concern about your spiritual condition is evidence of God's grace at work within you. Repentance isn't something we muster up in our own strength; it's a gift from God that flows from a heart He has transformed.

Bible Verse

'Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble.' - 2 Peter 1:10

Reflection Question

What evidence of genuine repentance do you see in your life, and how does this give you confidence in your relationship with God?

Quote

“True repentance is proof of salvation.”-Jimmy Clendenin

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of repentance that flows from a heart You have transformed. Help me to see the evidence of Your work in my life through my response to sin. Give me assurance of my salvation not through my perfection, but through the genuine sorrow and turning that comes when I fall short. Continue to work in me both to will and to do Your good pleasure. Amen.
