What Does the Bible Say About Wars and the End Times?

With recent events in Iran making headlines, many Christians are wondering if we're witnessing the beginning of the end times. However, before jumping to conclusions about current world events, it's important to understand what Jesus himself said about wars and their relationship to the end times.

Jesus' Teaching About Wars and Rumors of Wars

Jesus clearly addressed this concern in Matthew 24:6: "And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled for these. All these things shall come that must come to pass. But the end is not yet."

As long as this world exists, there will be warfare. Current conflicts in the Middle East, while significant, are simply part of the ongoing pattern of "wars and rumors of wars" that Jesus predicted would characterize human history until the millennium.

What Must Happen Before the End Times Begin?

The biblical timeline shows that specific events must occur before the Great Tribulation begins. Most importantly, the Antichrist must sign a seven-year treaty with Israel. Since we cannot identify the Antichrist and this treaty hasn't been signed, current events are not signaling the immediate end times.

Understanding the Rapture: The Next Prophetic Event

For believers, the next major prophetic event is the Rapture - a church-specific event for all who are truly born again from the day of Pentecost until it occurs.

The Rapture Will Happen Suddenly

First Corinthians 15:51-52 describes this event: "Behold, I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."

The Rapture will happen instantly, with power greater than an atomic explosion. The dead will be called from their graves faster than you can snap your fingers, and living believers will meet Christ in the air.

Christians Are Not Appointed to God's Wrath

First Thessalonians 5:9-10 provides comfort: "For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him."

What's coming to earth isn't just God's judgment - it's God's wrath. If you're saved, you're not appointed to that wrath but to obtain salvation through Jesus Christ.

The Great Tribulation: Seven Years of Unprecedented Suffering

After the Rapture, a seven-year period called the Tribulation will begin. Jesus described this time in Matthew 24:21: "For then there will be great tribulation, such as not been since the beginning of the world until this time. No, nor ever shall be."

The Four Horsemen: Characteristics of the Tribulation

Revelation chapter 6 describes four key characteristics of this period through the imagery of four horsemen:

1. Deception (The White Horse)

The Antichrist will come appearing to bring peace, particularly through negotiating a treaty in the Middle East. However, his true goal is conquest through deception. There's a fascinating connection between Judas and the Antichrist - both are called "sons of perdition" in Scripture. Just as Judas deceived the disciples for three and a half years without them suspecting his true nature, the Antichrist will deceive the world into believing he's the Messiah.

2. Destruction (The Red Horse)

Global warfare will engulf the earth. Unlike previous world wars, this will be truly global - affecting every continent, nation, and household. One-third of the world's population will die from warfare during these seven years.

3. Desperation (The Black Horse)

Economic collapse will make survival nearly impossible. It will take an entire day's wages to buy one meal. Families will resort to murder and theft just to survive. Interestingly, luxury items (oil and wine) will be spared, meaning the wealthy will initially be unaffected while common people struggle for basic necessities.

4. Disease, Disaster, and Death (The Pale Horse)

Natural disasters will be commonplace but not random. Hundred-pound hailstones, extreme heat, poisoned water, tornadoes, and diseases spread by creatures will devastate the earth. Another fourth of the world's population will die from these causes.

Why Won't People Repent During the Tribulation?

Despite experiencing unprecedented suffering, people will not turn to God in repentance. Revelation 16:21 describes their response to hundred-pound hailstones: "Men blasphemed God" rather than asking for help or repenting. Instead of seeking God, people will prefer death over repentance, asking mountains and rocks to fall on them rather than face God's wrath.

The Logic of Salvation Today

Christianity is logical, while remaining lost is completely illogical. Since the Rapture could happen at any moment without warning, and since it will happen suddenly with great power, today would be the perfect day to get saved if you're not already.

The question every lost person should consider: How can you be sure you'll turn to Jesus during the Tribulation when it will cost you everything, when you won't turn to Him today when it costs you nothing?

Life Application

The reality of coming judgment should motivate us in two key ways. First, if you're not saved, the logical response is to trust Christ today. Romans 10:9-10 shows the way: "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from dead, you will be saved."

Second, if you are saved, this knowledge should compel you to share the Gospel with others. The Rapture could happen at any moment, and those left behind will face unimaginable suffering.

Consider these questions: Are you truly saved and ready for the Rapture? If so, who in your life needs to hear the Gospel? How will you share Christ's love with them this week?

What's preventing you from having that conversation today when it costs nothing, knowing that tomorrow it might cost them everything?
