The Danger of Religion Without Christ
Religion without Jesus Christ can be one of the most dangerous forces on earth. This truth becomes crystal clear when we examine the religious leaders' response to Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead- a miracle that should have sparked revival but instead ignited a deadly conspiracy.
What Happens When Miracles Don't Lead to Faith?
After Jesus performed the impossible by calling Lazarus back to life after four days in the tomb, you would expect such an undeniable miracle to cause widespread belief. Instead, the religious establishment responded with scheming rather than surrender, wickedness instead of worship.
"'Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him. But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did.'" - John 11:45-46
The same gospel message produces different responses in different hearts. The difference isn't the message - it's the condition of the heart receiving it. Some hearts, like clay in the sun, grow harder with each rejection of truth. Others, like wax in the heat, soften and become moldable by God's word.
Why Did Religious Leaders Plot Against Jesus?
The religious council, led by the high priest Caiaphas, didn't deny Jesus' miracles. They admitted He was performing signs - miracles with divine purpose that proved His identity as the Christ. Their concern wasn't whether Jesus was the Messiah, but what His growing influence would cost them.
"'What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.'" - John 11:47-48
The Corruption Behind the Temple System
Caiaphas had built a religious empire with both political connections to Rome and financial control over the people. When Jesus cleansed the temple, He wasn't just upset about money changing - He was exposing a corrupt system where religious leaders would find "blemishes" in people's sacrifices, forcing them to buy approved animals at inflated prices. This multi-billion dollar operation gave them complete control over worship and access to God. Their concern wasn't truth - it was maintaining their power, position, and wealth.
How Can Religious People Miss God Completely?
Caiaphas represents the worst form of religious corruption. He wore the robes of the high priest but had the heart of a conspirator. Though he spoke with wicked intent, God used even his corrupt words to prophesy divine truth:
"'You know nothing at all, nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.'" - John 11:49-50
Caiaphas meant "let's kill Jesus to save ourselves," but God meant "kill Jesus to save the world." Even Satan's ministers can unknowingly speak God's truth, but their hearts remain unchanged.
What Does It Mean to Blaspheme the Holy Spirit?
The most sobering truth is that God's patience has limits. When people persistently reject the Holy Spirit's drawing toward salvation, there comes a point of divine withdrawal.
"'And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh.'" - Genesis 6:3
The Holy Spirit draws every person to salvation, but He won't draw forever. Each rejection of His call is blasphemy against His work. While Jesus died for all sins, rejecting the Spirit's call to salvation has eternal consequences that no amount of religious activity can overcome.
Can You Be Religious and Still Go to Hell?
Being Baptist, Pentecostal, or any other denomination won't get you to heaven. Church membership, religious knowledge, or even performing religious duties cannot save you. Only a personal relationship with Jesus Christ can provide eternal life. Many people today, like Caiaphas, are deeply religious but completely lost. They may know scripture, hold religious positions, or even perform miracles, but they've rejected the Savior Himself.
Why Does God Allow Religious Corruption?
God's sovereignty is so complete that He can use even corrupt religious leaders to accomplish His purposes. However, this doesn't excuse their wickedness or guarantee their salvation. Those who lead others astray while claiming to represent God face the severest judgment. The religious establishment's plot to kill Jesus actually fulfilled God's plan for salvation, but their motives remained evil and their eternal destiny unchanged.
Life Application
Don't let religion keep you from a real relationship with Jesus Christ. If you've grown up in church but never truly surrendered your life to Christ, examine whether you're trusting in religious activity or in Jesus Himself. True salvation requires laying down your pride, your need for control, and your religious traditions to receive the risen Christ.
Ask yourself these questions this week:
• Am I trusting in my church membership or religious activities for salvation, or have I personally surrendered my life to Jesus Christ?
• Do I show the fruit of the Spirit in my daily life, or am I just going through religious motions?
• When the Holy Spirit convicts me of sin or calls me to deeper commitment, do I respond in obedience or resist His leading?
Remember, today is the day of salvation. The Bible never promises you'll have another opportunity tomorrow, but it clearly states that now is the accepted time. Don't let religious pride or the pursuit of control keep you from the eternal life that only Jesus can provide.
